Importance of Hand Analysis for All Rummy Game Variations

Rummy is a card game that keeps you on the edge of your seat because it is so engrossing, nail-biting and the outcome is extremely unpredictable. Each rummy game is unique. There are hundreds of thousands of ways that a rummy game can play out. In that way, it is no different from another strategy-based game – chess.

You have to be hyper-alert to your opponent’s moves and constantly change up your own strategies in keeping with the changing requirements of the games. There are many aspects of the rummy game that you need to focus on if you want to win. One such aspect is your hand of cards. Winning a rummy game online hinges on how well you can analyze your hand. Let us understand this better.

What is a hand in a rummy game?

Hand in a rummy game or any card game for that matter, refers to the cards that you have in your hand. The hand depends on the type of rummy game you are playing. For example, in a 13 card rummy game such as Pool rummy, you will have a 13 card rummy hand, in a 21 card rummy game, the hand will consist of 21 cards.

What do you have to do with your hand?

According to rummy rules, to win a rummy game, you will have to arrange all your cards into valid sequences and sets.

Each sequence contains 3 or more cards of successive rank and all the cards must be from the same suit. A set in a rummy game will comprise 3 or more cards of the same rank but from different suits.

Different versions of rummy have different rules regarding how many sequences you need to win a rummy game. For example, in the 13 card rummy game, 2 sequences must be produced out of which one must be a pure sequence (it is formed without a joker) while the other can be either a pure or impure sequence. In the 21 card rummy game, you need to produce at least 3 pure sequences.

Why analyze your hand?

Analyzing your hand simply means gauging how you will arrange your hand. Right off the bat, after the cards are dealt to you at the beginning of the rummy game, you should be able to form an idea as to which cards to be arranged into which sequence and set.

Once you’ve formed a mental picture, you’ll know which cards in your hand are of no use to you. So these are the cards that you will be discarding off as the rummy game progresses. For example, if you have too many high-value cards and you can’t arrange them all into sequences and sets, you will have to get rid of them when your turns come.

A dream hand comprises only cards that can easily be arranged into valid sequences and sets. There will be just the right number of joker cards to help you get the impure sequences and sets.

Getting a dream hand in a rummy game is nearly impossible as the odds are completely against it. But even if you get a hand that is moderately good, you can learn to masterfully form the sequences and sets with enough rummy game practice.

What if you get a bad hand?

There will be occasions when you will be dealt a hand with such disparate cards that they simply can’t be organized into sequences and sets. In that case, it is best to drop from the rummy game. If you drop at your first turn, it’s called an initial drop, and dropping from the rummy game anytime after that is the middle drop.

Dropping or quitting the rummy game will cost you certain penalty points. But the penalty points would be less than what your score would be if the rummy game were to end with another person winning.
