Role of joker in Indian Rummy and other card games

We all know that Joker plays a very important role in different card games including Indian rummy. Joker card has the potential to change the game and can unlock opportunities for the players to deal with the most unpredictable scenarios. Though joker cards have been used in many different card games throughout centuries, it is believed that joker was first introduced for the game Euchre by Euchre players. In the historic card games, it is the “Highest trump card” or the “Best Bower”. Being a versatile card, it carries its own ‘suit,’ and is not associated with any of the four suits i.e. diamonds, clubs, hearts, and spades.

Depending on the rules of the game, this trickiest card either provides a relevant contribution to the game or no relevance at all. It can be extremely powerful or extremely detrimental. As the different card games evolved, the role of joker in each of these games also changed drastically. While in many card games jokers hold a significant role, many completely ignored the use of this card.

We have listed out some of the popular card games where the joker is used and explained the use of joker is different in each of these games:

  • 13 Card Rummy: Also known as Indian Rummy, this card game is believed to be an extension of Gin Rummy and Rummy 500. You will find many different variations in Indian Rummy; namely points, deal, and pool. Here, players use jokers to replace other cards and form valid sets and sequences. After forming a pure sequence, a joker can help a player to win a game of rummy.
  • 21 Card Rummy: The role of the joker is in 21 Card Rummy is similar to Indian rummy i.e. substituting any card to make a sequence or set. The only difference is that we have “value cards” along with jokers. These cards function as jokers and have additional points attached. If 5 of diamonds is the wild joker, then 4,5, and 6 of diamonds will be the Value Cards for the game, and players who have any of them can grab 20 points from their rival players. The points of value cards are honoured and help players to apply effective strategies to win the game.
  • Euchre: It is a trick-taking card game commonly played in Canada, New Zealand, Great Britain, and the United States. Normally there are four players, two on each team, although there are variations when it comes to players count. In this game, the usage of the joker is extremely important as it plays the role of the highest bower or highest trump.
  • Canasta: In this rummy game variant, players form melds of seven cards combinations of three or more cards of the same rank – with or without the help of wild cards. Here Jokers (along with 2s) are wild cards and are used in melds as substitutes for cards of the appropriate rank. While forming a meld, a joker holds 50 points and a deuce (two number card) holds 20 points. Therefore, Joker plays a vital role in this game.
  • Gin Rummy: Gin Rummy is played without jokers. But it can use the joker as a wild card to be used as any rank or suit to complete a gin.
  • Mighty: It is a point-trick card game that includes bidding. In this game, the joker is the second most powerful card in the game as it cannot be played in mighty in the first or the last trick.
  • Pitch: This card game uses the joker card differently in different variants. In some variants, it is added to the pack as an additional trump ranked below the two of trumps.
  • Chase the Joker: In this card game, the joker card is used as a substitute for the ace.
  • Spades: The game is played with a standard deck of cards with distinguishable two jokers i.e. ‘Big Joker’ (full-colour joker) and ‘little joker’ (one colour joker). In this game, the joker cards are the two highest-ranking trumps.

We can conclude that whether its Indian rummy game or any other card game, the versatility use of jokers in different card games makes the game interesting and helps players to turn the game into their favour if used appropriately.
